suchen Zitronensittich (von Dänemark)

Beitragvon Scorpmoon » 15.07.2004, 02:55

Hallo,

Mein deutsch ist schlechtes, so here we go in english ;-)

I'm looking for a Mountain Parakeet (Zitronensittich) as a tame bird. I want to handfeed it myself. As there are very few people who has this bird in private, I can't seem to find anyone who expect to have eggs this season in Denmark. So I might be willing to drive to Germany if anyone have this bird?

I could be contacted at scorpmoon@yahoo.com.

Hallo scorpmoon,

this forum assists the natural keeping and breeding of birds. I'm sure you won't find anybody here who gives you an egg.

Why do you want to handfeed the bird anyway. The bird will implant the human as its partner in life. That could only make it unhappy.

Hello,

I would recommend two young Mountain Parakeets of natural breeding, too. They will get tame, if you invest some time and patience. :) Often they are already tamed by the breeder during the breeding. Hand breeding has so much risks and there is always something missing, for the adult birds which lose their eggs or immatures as well as for the young who don't get to know their parents and other birds at all. Please reconsider this plan, in my opinion birds should be kept appropriate to the species.. not just for the "luck" of the owner..

Bye,
Meike

Hello and welcome Scorpmoon,

I've got an egg for you-CHICKEN. :-D
Sorry I could't resist. I totally agree with Bettina + Meike, nobody here will sell any bird eggs. Hand raising should be only done under certain circumstances, for example the parents do not feed the baby bird or something serious, fatal happens and mother natur needs some help. Everything else is not acceptable. Why does it have to be hand raised? I don't understand that. Once again Hello from Germany.

Hi again,

I'm sorry, but I think I was misunderstood. Ofcourse I don't want to get eggs.

The best time for getting the youngster is about 1 week after it gets eyes (aprox. 2½ weeks after hatching).

I respect your oppinion about what is best for the bird. The Mountain Parakeet is in my oppinion a Macaw in a very small body :-) Big parrots are often handfed, but not so often the parakeets. The reason why I want to handfeed, is to get a truly tame bird. I've seen these birds tame, and know how wonderful they are.

Also keep in mind that the bird will stay with parents for 2½ week, a chance to improve its immune system, and still feel abit about how it is to be a bird.

Hello,

I have experiences with handbreeding by myself (just to save life after the death of his brother or sister because the adults didn't fed in a right way). I could see how the adults looked for their immature, screeming and flying in all rooms. It was a very hard situation for all of us and I don't want to have this again. This is one of the problems I see. Did you ever handfeed? Because there are many risks doing it by yourself. And in your case there will be a long transport to your home, I don't think it's the right way for such young immatures..

I respect your opinion, of course, but I see some prolems and just want to show them. I have untamed birds by myself and I have so much fun watching them.. I like them as much as my few tame birds. (Tame birds can be very annoying by the way if they always want to be with the people, though there is no time for them at the moment, disturb at work and so on ;) ). I really would advice you to find a breeder where the immatures get to used to the breeders hand, they are almost or already tame. Don't you dare to tame by yourself?? ;) May I ask why tame birds are so important? Do you have experiences with birds already? I find it more interesting to watch them in their natural behavior, playing and singing with the others. It's just great. :ja:

Bye,
Meike

Hi Meike,

oh well, now my request turned into a discusson..

You like birds with their natural behaviour (or as natural as it can be when they are in an outside voliere), I like tame birds. A pet.

No, I did not handfeed. Infact, I never had a bird before. But when I decide something I prepare for it with great detail. Reading numerous books/webpages on the subject, and visiting handfeeders asking them questions for several months. Everyone who handfeeds had a first time doing it. Why should I buy a wellen- or nymphen-sittich like everyone else buys as their first pet bird? My conclusion with the zitronensittich is a very mature choice, after visiting almost every other "common parrot" there is, and viewing them in real life.

I agree with your point with the transportation. Well, I live not too far from the german border. But consider this: When you take unweaned birds from their nest, their crop should be completely empty before you start feeding them the handfeeding formula. So they don't require feeding on the trip. Next, my car has heated seats. The heat cannot be controlled, but I reckon with a couple of blankets and thermometer, you can control the temperature in its box somewhat acceptable. Ofcourse I'm only interested in driving from Northern parts of Germany.

Alot of breeders really shut down on me when I mention that I want a tame bird. I just hope to find one who doesn't share that oppinion.
